Tougher Than The Rest

I’ve loved this song for years, and played it in public once or twice, but it didn’t occur to me to record it until tonight, when Nelson George tweeted about listening to “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” Gigi and I used to listen to “The River” endlessly, and those were some of the first songs I tried to figure out on a guitar. I think, by the time you are a junior or senior in high school, there is some sense of the dangers that adulthood holds for you, and “The River” had such forewarning  that love is worth the risk because in the end it may be all you have. All the cars and the girls couldn’t get you away from the price you’d have to pay for the life you’d lived.

But until you get there yourself, you never really know.
